Language Arts
During fourth quarter, we will be working on a grammar unit on spelling and vocabulary. During this unit, students will take notes in class and complete worksheets over the topics that we cover each day. At the end of the unit, students will take a test. All of the information that we are covering is also in chapter 14 of their grammar textbook.
After the grammar unit, we will be focusing the rest of our time on reading The Boy in the Stiped. While reading this novel, students will be expected to complete a worksheet of comprehension questions for each chapter. At the end of the novel, students will take a test.
Also during fourth quarter, each student is expected to earn 8 A.R. points. They may earn up to 10 points for extra credit. If students have not already taken an A.R. test on The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, they may do so when we finish the novel. This book is worth 7 A.R. points.
Each week, students will receive their spelling list, which consists of 15 words. On Monday nights, their homework will be to write their spelling words five times each, and on Wednesday nights they will be expected to write 15 original sentences using that week's spelling words. Each week we will have a spelling test on Friday.

Social Studies
In 6th grade social studies, we will be discussing different ancient civilizations throughout the world.
In fourth quarter, we will be completing chapter 7 in their social studies textbooks, which is over Ancient China. After chapter 7, we will spend the rest of our social studies class working on a research paper.
At the beginning of each class, students are expected to define that lesson's vocabulary terms. After that, we read through the section and complete guided notes over what we read. At the end of each lesson, students complete a maximum of five comprehension questions over the information in the section we read.
When we reach the end of the unit, we play a review game that includes the social studies questions straight from the test. This review game gives the students an opportunity to see what information they will be tested over. During this game, I divide the class into two teams to compete to answer the questions. Whichever team wins the review game earns an extra credit. I offer this extra credit opportunity with the hope that students will want to be prepared for the review game and start studying a couple nights before the test. After the review game, I give the students the short answer questions straight from the test, so they know what to prepare for.
